Why I Love Broad City #BC

Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer have created something pretty damn special. If you’ve not already seen Broad City you should look it up immediately.

The sitcom is about two Jewish girls in their 20s living in New York who are best friends and together deviate the standard formula of ‘growing up’. Named after the writers (and stars) Abbi and Ilana embrace the modern lifestyle and growing culture of multiple partners, new technology, recreational drug use and temporary jobs.

Here’s a list of reasons why I love Broad City:

  1. It’s empowering to women. No these girls aren’t high flying successful career people, but neither are they girlfriends, wives or mothers. They are essentially fuck ups who are having a great time. It’s not often you see women in this role, especially as the protagonist.
  2. Ilana refers to themselves as Queens. Yes girls, you ARE Queens.
  3. Abbi is that little bit of hopeless that we can all relate to. Actually she’s a lot I can relate to – even down to having the same items in my bedroom as her.
  4. Abbi has a creative dream – don’t we all?
  5. The show is about two Jewish girls – again something I can relate to coming from a Jewish family.
  6. They approach sex in a way that is blatant and daring. Abbi even has a post-it note on her vibrator reminding her when to masturbate.
  7. They reference annoying and sexist situations women face every day in a comedic way that says suck-it. This is what the girls do when being told to ‘smile’ by a group of men.broad-city-smiling
  8. The men of Broad City are great. Especially Lincoln.
  9. The dynamic between the two characters is just as real on screen as off (follow them on Instagram or read articles about them and you’ll see this).
  10. The girls are real. There’s not even a fleck of ‘I must be skinny and beautiful and made up’ pressure shown on the show. And that is really why I love Broad City.
